Viva! The world itself evokes so many cringe worthy and nerve tickling memories. We all have faced these hurdle in the path of passing lab exams. It wasn’t the viva that scared us; it was the examiner who conducted it. I believe their principle will be something along the line ‘You people give us hard times during class hours. Now it’s revenge time’ I can even imagine the two horns on their head, complete with the evil laugh 😈
In one of my programming lab exams, the examiner came to my table first. He asked a few questions and I answered them. Pleased, he asked more. I was well prepared and answered them all. This went on for 50 minutes and had my friends think that he was some relative or friend of mine and we were having a chat. But only I knew how he had covered the whole syllabus in those 50 minutes. I had answered all the questions but he still looked unhappy! The last question was about something I didn’t know and when I said that, his expression turned into that of victory. “Prepare well next time” was his parting dialogue.
One thing I have learnt over the years is no matter of preparations is enough to face the viva. Because the motto is to have you say ‘I don’t know’ in the end. If you don’t say that, who will they give their well rehearsed speech of “Never pay attention in class. Is this what you learnt? This is how your generation is. Hopeless. Don’t know how to respect elders. No manners………. Religious intolerance…… Demonetization…. Why Kattappa killed Bahubali…Blah blah blah” Yes, the scoldings that sound specific to you, turn for the whole class, the whole generation and at the end become a monologue. At this stage one is free to take a short nap.
One of the funniest viva experience I had was when I was in 3rd semester. It was electronics lab. But the question I was asked was “What is the reason behind women wearing Sindhoor?” I looked at him confused wondering if I should say it is a good conductor of electricity and recharges the system and acts as a means to keep negative energy away but something told me he wouldn’t appreciate my sense of humour. So I let him speak about how girls of this generation know nothing. Once he was done, he asked me “Why there is no signal in this part of your college?” I wanted to ask if he had apparated directly inside the lab! If not, surely he would have noticed on the way to the lab that it was in the basement and hence signal reception was poor. But once again I let him blabber and went back to my experiment once he was done!
Do you have any particular memory associated with viva? Did you just sit there and pray for it to get over or did you answer everything? Let me know in the comments below.
