As far as I am concerned, presentations are the worst things that could happen. Explaining concepts to friends is fine but if I have to go on stage to do it? No, thank you! I am fine sitting in a corner and listening to others’ presentations. But things seldom go the way you wish.
As it happened, I was caught talking to one of my friend. Unfortunately, though we both were talking, when the lecturer saw us, I was the only one talking. I was so carried away in the discussion, I didn’t notice my friend stiffening suddenly and paying attention to the lecturer. So, I was the only one caught red-handed
speaking disturbing the person who was listening to the lecture with great interest! And to my horror, I was assigned the the task of giving a presentation in the next hour, explaining the concept our lecturer was teaching.
He couldn’t have picked a worst punishment. I mean, making me stand was fine. Or he could have sent me out; I would have loved that. But I guess lecturers know that sending one out these days is hardly considered as punishment. It is a blessing in disguise! So, he chose to assign me a seminar for the next day. I wasn’t scared of reading a new concept and teaching it; I was scared of presenting it in front of 75 students! Oh, the stage fear. I begged my lecturer for forgiveness. You see, it works most of the time. But it only convinced him more to go with the presentation idea.
So, I was standing on the dais the next day, ready to give the presentation. I had
instructed begged my classmates not to listen to me. They could doze off for all I cared! But the idiots were ready with mobile in hand to click embarrassing pictures during the presentation. I remember being so nervous in the beginning and that is the only part I remember. Rest passed in a breeze. Oh, I also remember my friends making funny faces to get me laughing! Thankfully, I didn’t and my lecturer was pleased with the effort I had put in. Finally, I was off the hook! Or so I thought until he asked the most dreaded question – Any Questions?
Do you have any similar experience? Are you scared of facing too many people? Or are presentations just a piece of cake for you? Let me know in the comments below.
